Five cultural barriers to creativity requirement for conformity, expectations of efficiency, arenas for competition, expectations of politeness and following rules. The text makes a great example that because we are raised with many rules, and expectations on how to behave it becomes hard for us at times to think outside the box. I find these a problem each and everyday especially the expectation to be efficient. It seems we are given too much work and not enough time, and because we want to please (be competitive) it becomes ingrained in us to do so. This is why classes like art and music are essential because being creative is taken from school settings, even at recess you see kids simply imitating other kids, rarely being their ‘own person’ It takes a strong individual to be themselves and often called weird when they’re creative, which is because they aren’t the norm, but it’s necessary in a creative sense ‘thinking outside the box.”

I completely agree with you! It definitely seems like nowadays people are rarely being their own person and always trying to imitate what they see in the media whether it is the latest hairstyle, trend, or type of music. I think we are all guilty of it sometimes, it's just some of us do it more often that others. I think a lot of it has to do with conforming to what society and our peers expect us to look and act like... so even though we know that what we are not expressing our own identities, we continue to act in other ways because we seek acceptance. To me it's kind of strange, because somehow we have evolved to a society where being called "weird" can actually be considered a compliment and calling a person "trendy" can be an insult. Ironically, so many people are caught up trying to be "different" and stand out from their peers yet they all look and act the same.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, we do need to make time in school and in our lives for arts of any form. People do take a lot of things for granted and don't take time out of their busy days for this. Also kids are being pressured to do math and science and english and excel at all of them. Unfortunately these subjects are not for everyone. This is why so many students don't go to college or drop out, they are meant to do other things, like be a mechanic or a tour guide somewhere cool, or a river rafting guide, dancer, musician, etc. But society makes us believe we must go to college to be successful or we must be good at math and english to make money.
